Public Speaking
Based on what I learned when I had my own consulting practice, I encourage public speaking as a way to get recognized locally as an expert. It seems to work in almost any field. Whether it’s business consulting or plumbing.
My personal opinion is that it’s because ordinary citizens recognize the bravery and confidence you exhibit when you are willing to stand up in front of a group and expose yourself. After all, they’re thinking, would this person be standing up there telling me what to do if they didn’t know what to do? It’s implicit that if you’re “up there” in front of an audience, you know what you’re talking about.
Well, that’s not always the way it is.
Many times the person up there and thought of as an expert is actually totally inept at performing the function for which they are recognized as an expert. They were merely the only one brace enough to get up in front of the crowd.

But, because they did, they got the client.
